Statement

Teaching Goals

Based on my belief that the only way to become good mechanical engineer is the person who can help society to solve mechanical problem.  However, it is hard to achieve just learn through valuable process of reading from lecture notes or examples and proofs in textbooks.  They must experience it with assignment of problem, case study or project in a group and work together as a team to solve the problem.  My role as coach or facilitator should design a framework in which learning can take place,  support student development and stimulate them through imparting the knowledge and techniques from real world experiences, and encouragement .

Good engineer not only know how to solve the problem, they also should have ability to communicate their knowledge to other.  To gain that ability, my goals are not just focus on learning of the subject matter but will facilitate to improve writing skills (writing clearly and concisely, explaining step-by-step processes, providing valid reasons for logical arguments).

My teaching goal is to become a recognize good teacher, so I should have continuously improvement on communication skill and relationship with my students.  I am also should mastering the subject through continuously update knowledge by any means that can help me to get it.   The lecture materials should be developed as teaching module, a teaching module developed into a book.

Statement of Teaching Responsibilities

My intellectual interest is in a broad field known as Mechanical Engineering Design.  Areas such as machine or product design which is cover from concept until disposal or recycle.  Based on this interest I am working with all design phase using latest technology such as analysis, simulation and modeling tools.  Other than that I am not only focus on product or machine design, any thing relate to product/machine or process improvement such as pressure vessel design & construction, work study, maintenance management, energy management, etc.

My first degree is in the field of mechanical/system engineering, which deals with the production and automation; the second is in an innovation and engineering design, which involved in engineering innovation and design process. Finally, I am in progress of completing my doctoral degree in product reliability.  My teaching, research, and consulting activities are multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary in nature which includes: Mechanical Engineering Design, Product/Machine Design, Product Reliability, Work Study, Maintenance Management, and Energy Management. I am also interested to branch in the simulation and modeling design.

I started work at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (FKM) in January 2010 as Lecturer after 20 years working experiences with Local & International Company and Education Institution, then completed my Master of Innovation & Engineering Design from University of Putra Malaysia, 2009.  So far, I already teach core subjects such as Mechanical Engineering Design I & II, Strength Material Lab and Introduction To Engineer at undergraduate level and Engineering Design for diploma level.  On average, I teach three classes per semester for the mainstream students and two subject for Out Campus Program (PLK).

My other teaching responsibilities include the supervision of undergraduate projects, committee member for  industrial practical training, committee for industrial relationship, secretary for Mechanical Engineering Design II, Committee Member for Anugerah Kecemerlangan Naib Censelor (AKNC) and associate member for center of excellence – (CADEM).  Every semester, I involved in final year project assessment for undergraduate. Normally there are 2 to 3 students need to be evaluated.  As practical training (LP) committee member, I am responsible to coordinate with chairman of committee for searching new place or industry for student to go for training and visit student during practical.

Statement of Teaching Philosophy

I am agreed with the slogan “To learn, read.  To know, write.  To master, teach.”  Every body have equal chance only to those have chosen for.  That mean to be master in our interest we should share with other, if more we share with other, more we will get.  The best position for us  to share is perform as teacher.  I am also believe that my responsibility as teacher to provide students  with a conducive environment to learn, to facilitate them to seek knowledge that will help them to success in achieving their goals.  I am not only teach the students, but I can be partnering with them in exploring knowledge.  With the intention of this responsibility I have faith in that my students have duties to me, fellow students, and themselves.  So, we are partner that will support each other to work hard to achieve course outcomes.

Statement of Teaching Methodology, Strategies, Objectives

Class sessions - lecture and discussion: My common practice to begin the class with some of previous class session reflection, and  remind about current topic that we are working on.  Usually, I will ask if there are any questions from the student before continue with new topic or discussion.  Normally my classes is involve with project or case study that is given during first week of the semester.  When I begin to give lecturer most of the time I will use the project or case study that was given to students as reference for discussion.  Most of my discussion will be included with relevant example in order to make discussion more interesting.  Sometime I will pause the lecture just to create more interactive discussion through question and answer.  I am also use joke or sense of humor to make classroom more fresh rather than boring.  To ensure the student is following our discussion, I will get update about the status of the given project and ask about practicing of tool such as method or concept that has been discussed in the class.

I believed that each student has their own learning style, such visual, auditory and kinesthetic.  To serve variety of student learning style I should use various method of teaching such as lecture and power point note that include description, picture and graph, two way discussion and problem solving through case study.  Through this approach I believed that course material can be absorb by students.

Homework - level of difficulty, projects, group work:

In order to get feedback from students what level of their understanding, I am given to individual student weekly reflection log that used for them to write what have they understand and learned for the week and what should their find out to get better understanding or helping them to solve the problem.  The student also should provide update the project status through weekly minute of meeting sheet.

Uses of technology: Computer and LCD is useful technology that help to present material in most of my classes.  Same thing to my students they are required to use computer and special software to develop model, simulate and analysis the product or machine element.  The students also using computer for preparing presentation and report.  In some cases students need to use special manufacturing process that perform by CNC, Wirecut or TIG/MIG welding process.

Future Teaching Goals

I am still learning and observe the student learning style and culture in this campus.  At the same time the improvement of teaching method and skill are continuous activities that I learn from ongoing experience.  Most of my student is undergraduate student semester 5 and above.  It mean half of engineering science knowledge had been taught.  They are already halfway of their destiny as a mechanical engineer.  It is time for me to change the approach from teaching to coaching.  Let the student confident to made their own decision based on their knowledge and support by proper coaching skill.  Try to expose the student with real working environment such as comparing their work with the actual work in industry, group the student not more than 5 as a team and perform like a company with several key person that are responsible for managing the project, conduct short seminar or meeting where the student as as responsible person in the company should present their project to the class or the client or top management, and finally provide complete technical report.  I hope with this approach, the student should aware about working environment and prepare their self with confident to manage and present their work.  As teacher I am also should not stop my self to learn and continuously update my self with knowledge to make sure I am not missing.  To ensure that I need to attend any relevant seminar, short course or any knowledgeable activities.

Synopsis of Module: Mechanical Engineering Design II
This course is a continuation of Mechanical Engineering Design I.  It incorporates and integrates previously acquired knowledge and skills in the study of mechanical engineering through a real-world and open-ended engineering project.  Students will continue their design efforts until completion.  Product design using and based on current standard, codes and practices is emphasized.

Synopsis of Module: Mechanical Engineering Design
This course deals with applications of the design process to solve engineering problems.  Fundamentals in mechanical engineering design as a process is introduced and a team structure is used to design a mechanical device or machine that performs the functions established by a project description.  The team produces detailed drawing and specifications, a presentation, and a prototype of the proposed design.  Students are required to undertake a design project which incorporates most of the knowledge and skills acquired throughout the program.

Publication

No publication has been made so far. however intention to produce a book regrading mechanical engineering design is in my mind because after three semester conducting design class, I found that the student did not understand how to apply science  knowledge in the design and proper guide should show to them.  This support can transform through book or good teaching module.
